Almost 20 years after the Supreme Court directed the government to legislate for abortion where a woman’s life is in jeopardy no government has brought forward legislation. Today Socialist Party TD Clare Daly, ULA TD Joan Collins and Independent TD Mick Wallace moved the Medical Treatment (Termination of Pregnancy in Case of Risk to Life of Pregnant Woman) Bill 2012.
Spokesperson for Choice Ireland Sinead Ahern said “Over the past 20 years we have gone through several legal battles, two referenda, an all party commission, a green paper and now a so called expert group and still women cannot access their constitutional right to an abortion when their life is in danger. It is unacceptable that 20 years later Irish women must take a case to the Irish or European courts in order to exercise their rights. We commend Deputy Daly. Deputy Collins and Deputy Wallace for moving this bill, for doing what 20 successive governments have not been brave enough to do and for producing what we believe to be a sensible, well thought out and above all very necessary piece of legislation”.
Spokesperson Stephanie Lord said, “We have been waiting two decades for one piece of legislation. I am calling now on all parties to support this bill, to end decades of inaction and to decide Irish Abortion law where it should be decided, in the Dail and not in the courts”.
